Behind the Scenes at Crisis at Christmas
I spent five years working as the official photographer for national homeless charity Crisis, documenting life inside the Christmas shelters. Safe refuge is only part of the story. Behind closed doors every shelter offers a wide range of services and facilities made possible by extensive fundraising and support from sponsors. Just as important is the huge army of volunteers who give up Christmas to help others.
When I started working for Crisis the emphasis was very much on using large derelict buildings such as the London Arena and the old Leadenhall tower. It was incredible to see vast empty, cold. lifeless building brought back to life to offer much needed comfort and warmth to the homeless. Over the years this changed to using buildings with the infrastructure in place, such as schools typically empty over Christmas.
